Beacon Rock

History & Background

Beacon Rock is the remnant of an ancient volcanic plug -- the core of a volcano that eroded away over millennia, leaving behind this dramatic 848-foot monolith. Located on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, it was named by Lewis and Clark during their 1805 expedition, who noted it as a prominent navigational landmark. The rock was privately owned for many years before being donated to the state of Washington as a park. Today, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Columbia River Gorge and a beloved hiking destination.

The trail to the top of Beacon Rock is a well-maintained path with railings, bridges, and stairs built directly into the side of the rock. While short, it gains elevation quickly and offers incredible views of the Columbia River Gorge with every switchback. The summit rewards hikers with sweeping 360-degree views of the gorge, with Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens visible on clear days.

  Go early. The parking lot is small and fills quickly on weekends and sunny days.

  Wear sturdy shoes. The trail has steep sections and metal-grate stairways that can be slippery when wet.

  Bring water. The climb is short but steep, and there is no water available on the trail.

  Dogs allowed. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail.

After your hike, head into nearby Stevenson for a meal at one of the local restaurants or visit the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center. The Bridge of the Gods and Cascade Locks are just a short drive away, and you can continue your day exploring the many waterfalls along the Historic Columbia River Highway.
