History & Background

The Bridge of the Gods is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Columbia River Gorge. Its name comes from a Native American legend about a great natural bridge that once spanned the river, created by the gods as a crossing for the people. According to geological evidence, a massive landslide from Table Mountain did indeed create a natural dam across the Columbia River thousands of years ago, which Native peoples called "The Bridge of the Gods."

The current steel truss bridge was completed in 1926 and carries traffic between Oregon and Washington at Cascade Locks. It is also a famous crossing point for the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and the bridge's pedestrian walkway sees hundreds of through-hikers each year making their way along the 2,650-mile trail from Mexico to Canada.

What to Expect

Crossing the Bridge of the Gods is an experience in itself. The narrow two-lane bridge rises high above the Columbia River, offering spectacular views of the river, the Gorge, and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can see Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens in the distance. A pedestrian walkway allows you to walk across and take in the views at your own pace.

The bridge is also a fascinating spot for PCT enthusiasts. In summer, you will often see hikers with large backpacks crossing the bridge, marking a significant milestone on their journey. The Cascade Locks Marine Park on the Oregon side is a popular spot for photos of the bridge.

  Bring cash for the toll. The toll booth only accepts cash. If you are crossing from Oregon to Washington, the toll is collected on the Washington side for the return trip.

  Walk the bridge. Parking is available at the Cascade Locks Marine Park. Walk across the bridge for the best photo opportunities and views.

  Visit at sunset. The bridge is stunning at golden hour, with the light reflecting off the river and the mountains glowing in the distance.

  Look for PCT hikers. In late summer, you may see Pacific Crest Trail through-hikers crossing the bridge, a memorable sight.

The Bridge of the Gods is at the center of Gorge activity. Cascade Locks offers Thunder Island, Marine Park, local breweries like Thunder Island Brewing, and restaurants with river views. On the Washington side, Stevenson has the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center and great dining. Beacon Rock, Bonneville Dam, and the many Columbia Gorge waterfalls are all within a short drive.
