History & Background

Cape Horn is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Columbia River Gorge, located on the Washington side of the river. The lookout sits atop a dramatic basalt cliff that rises more than 2,000 feet above the Columbia River, offering an unobstructed panoramic view of the gorge stretching for miles in both directions. Named by early explorers for its resemblance to Cape Horn at the tip of South America, this spot has been a favorite of photographers, hikers, and nature lovers for generations. The area was protected from development by the creation of the Cape Horn Special Management Area, ensuring these views remain accessible to the public.

The Cape Horn Lookout rewards hikers with one of the most iconic views in the Columbia River Gorge. From the lookout, you can see the Columbia River winding through the gorge far below, with the Oregon side rising in steep, forested cliffs. On clear days, the views stretch for miles, encompassing Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and the Cascade Range. The trail itself passes through beautiful forests and along cliff edges, with wildflowers in spring and stunning fall colors.

The main lookout point is relatively accessible via a moderate hike, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The trail is well-maintained but does have some steep sections and exposed cliff areas that require caution.

Cape Horn Lookout is conveniently located between Washougal and Stevenson. After your hike, visit Washougal's waterfront or head into Camas for shopping and dining. The Columbia River Gorge's many waterfalls and attractions are all within easy driving distance. Stevenson's restaurants and the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center are just a short drive east.
