About Forest Park
Stretching along the west hills of Portland, Forest Park is an urban oasis and one of the largest forested city parks in the United States. At over 5,200 acres, it offers more than 80 miles of recreational trails for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Despite being minutes from downtown Portland, the dense canopy of Douglas fir, cedar, and maple makes you feel miles away from the city.
Quick Facts
- Size: 5,200+ acres of protected forest

Tips for Visiting
- 1Start at the Wildwood Trail. The 30-mile Wildwood Trail is the park's backbone and connects to many shorter loop options.
- 2Wear good shoes. Trails can be muddy, especially in the rainy season. Waterproof boots are always a good choice.
- 3Bring a map. Cell service can be spotty in the deeper parts of the park. Download a trail map before you go.
What to Expect
Forest Park is the kind of place you can visit every weekend and always discover something new. Popular trailheads include the Leif Erikson Drive (a wide, gravel road perfect for beginners) and the Pittock Mansion connecter trails. The park is home to abundant wildlife including deer, owls, and salamanders. In the spring, the forest floor is carpeted with trillium and wild ginger.
