About the International Rose Test Garden

Portland is known as the City of Roses, and the International Rose Test Garden is the crown jewel that earned that nickname. Established in 1917, it is the oldest continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. Over 10,000 rose bushes representing more than 600 varieties bloom here from spring through fall. Located in Washington Park, the garden offers breathtaking views of downtown Portland and, on clear days, Mount Hood.

What to Expect

The garden is beautifully laid out with terraced beds, fountains, and shaded seating areas. Fragrance fills the air, especially on warm summer days. You may see gardeners testing new rose varieties for the All-America Rose Selections competition. The Shakespeare Garden, adjacent to the main garden, features plants mentioned in his works. It is a romantic, peaceful spot beloved by locals and visitors alike.
