About The Grotto
The Grotto, officially known as the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is a 62-acre Catholic shrine and botanical garden located in northeast Portland. The centerpiece is the cave-like grotto carved into a 110-foot basalt cliff, housing a marble replica of Michelangelo's Pieta. The upper gardens feature lush walking trails, meditation areas, a monastery, and views of the Columbia River and Cascade Mountains. It is a place of quiet reflection open to people of all faiths.
