Wahclella Falls

History & Background

Wahclella Falls is one of the Columbia River Gorge's most beloved waterfalls, located on Tanner Creek in a lush, mossy canyon. The name "Wahclella" is a Native American word meaning "waterfalls," and this spectacular 350-foot two-tiered cascade does not disappoint. Unlike some of the more crowded Gorge waterfalls, Wahclella offers a slightly less-trafficked experience while delivering equally stunning scenery. The trail was rebuilt after the 2017 Eagle Creek fire and is better than ever.

The trail to Wahclella Falls follows Tanner Creek through a stunning mossy canyon lined with ferns, bigleaf maples, and towering Douglas firs. The well-maintained path crosses the creek several times on bridges and passes by small cascades and swimming holes along the way. The trail ends at a viewpoint overlooking the lower tier of Wahclella Falls, where you can feel the cool mist and enjoy the dramatic setting. The upper tier is visible through the trees from the main viewpoint.

  Bring a Northwest Forest Pass. You need one to park at the trailhead. They are available at ranger stations and outdoor retailers.

  Swimming is seasonal. The pools at the base are best enjoyed in summer when the water level is lower and safer.

  Wear traction on your shoes. The trail can be muddy and the rocks near the falls can be slippery.

  Arrive early on weekends. The parking lot is small and fills quickly, especially on summer weekends.

Nearby attractions include Multnomah Falls (just 2 miles west), Oneonta Gorge, Horsetail Falls, and the historic Vista House at Crown Point. The town of Cascade Locks is a short drive east with restaurants, breweries, and the Bridge of the Gods.
